Moving a project from ChatGPT to Claude, without explaining it all again
You started something in ChatGPT and now want Claude's take — or the other way round. The trouble is that neither one can see the other's conversations. Here is what actually needs to travel between them, and the quickest way to carry it.
Why switching assistants means starting over
ChatGPT and Claude are separate products. Whatever you worked out in one — the plan, the choices you made, the draft you liked — stays in that one. Open the other and it knows nothing about your project.
The usual workarounds are tiring. Pasting a whole conversation is long and messy, and the useful parts get lost among the false starts. Writing a summary by hand works, but you have to do it every time, and it is easy to forget the one decision that matters.
What actually needs to travel
Not the whole conversation — a brief. The same thing you would give a colleague taking over:
- The goal — what the project is for.
- Where things stand — what is done and what is not.
- Decisions already made, so they are not reopened.
- The work itself — the actual draft or list, not a note saying it exists.
- What to pick up next.
How to hand it over with PassTheBrief
PassTheBrief keeps that brief for each project, so it is ready whenever you switch. With any assistant, it works by copy and paste — nothing moves between apps on its own, but you never have to write the summary yourself.
- 1Keep the project in PassTheBrief: its goal, its tasks, and the work each assistant has done.
- 2Press Pass the brief. It copies the whole project as plain text, including each open task’s prompt and the work done so far.
- 3Paste it into Claude (or ChatGPT, Gemini, or any other assistant) and carry on from where you left off.
- 4The copied text asks the assistant to end its reply with a short section for PassTheBrief. Paste the whole reply into the paste box, check the preview, and its work is saved to the right task.
Next time you switch — back to ChatGPT, or on to another assistant — the brief already includes what Claude did.
An example

If you use Claude or ChatGPT every day: connect them
Claude and ChatGPT can also be connected to your PassTheBrief notebook directly. Then you can say “open my notes” and the assistant reads the project itself and saves its work back, with no copying. Every change it makes is recorded with its name.
Connecting is optional and takes a few minutes in the assistant’s settings; whether ChatGPT offers it depends on your plan. The help page explains how.
